Yes Jewish people often say that, but I understand the Hebrew Bible to speak of a "pit" in the earth where souls go upon death (cf. Jonah 2:6; Ezekiel 31:14). It carries the promise of Resurrection, as in Psalm 71:20, where David foresees: “from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.”

And yes, Christian men have a lot of misogyny, but not because they're Christian—it's because they're men! The Bible was the oddest choice, not at all authorizing male rule or male supremacy. It's quite the reverse. In the Bible, from the disciples on down, men tend to be stupid and foolish.
