Yes, I think this is right. The core sacrament of Evangelicalism is not being LGBT. All other rules can be flouted. This is because they know they’re not spiritual, and haven’t the foggiest idea what the Bible is about—but they tell themselves they can rest assured in salvation and divine blessing because they’re not gay. To take that away from them would be to expose the reality that they’re worse humans than most.
