I may do an update to this post as I learned Templeton’s previous book, in 1980, was a novel called "The Third Temptation" about a world-famous evangelist named 'Jimmy' who has to manage a sex scandal.
A quote from the novel:
"He had hidden his needs and subverted his appetites to win approval. He had sought praise before pleasure. How cleverly he'd fabricated the requisite Jimmy Coulter, holding up before the world this clever, clear-eyed, unselfish, ingratiating mannequin.
