Well, ancient gods are generally found hating humans, and indeed this would be proof of deity, to the point that a god who was not powerfully cruel would not be perceived as a god. I have often reflected on this idea after reading a passage in Zora Neale Hurston's novel Their Eyes Were Watching God:

“All gods who receive homage are cruel. All gods dispense suffering without reason. Otherwise they would not be worshipped.”
