Um, no. Marriage is not viewed as a ‘contract’, which is an agreement between two parties. A Christian marriage is a ‘covenant’—and seen as divinely enforced. This has often been prompts to other Christians to punish instead, through exclusions, even executions, and certainly with threats that the “adulterer” will be punished after death.

A religious marriage is done under such threats. A Christian is saying to a spouse: the Creator will punish you if we don’t get along.

God will hurt you if you don’t do what I say.

So that was not a fair contract at all between two people.
