There could be many reasons for airbrushing a photo. Maybe Hitler didn't want to encourage the idea he attended church there. But he'd take to advancing Nazism as a kind of Reformation out of both Catholicism and Protestantism. If the airbrushing was making a theological statement, then it might indicate a repudiation of Protestantism.
