Dahmer seems shy of calling himself a Christian but clearly suggests he had a longtime Christian identification. In the 1991 confession he says "I should have stayed with God." That suggests he'd earlier felt he was "with" God, and the reference seems to be his grandmother's church.

Living with his grandmother he was attending several times a week. He doesn't say he was trying to become a Christian but rather the Christianity wasn't working to curb his sex impulses.

I was looking today at Patrick Kennedy's book 'Grilling Dahmer' today. For what it's worth, he writes of Dahmer: "He had always believed in a Christian God, as he explained to his family before and during his crimes, and to police and his lawyers once he was caught."

Dahmer never tells Ratcliff he was converting in prison. That was just the formal step of baptism.
