The key to many of Paul's apparently 'sexual' references, in my view, is the conceptual backdrop of the Jewish people represented as Mother Mary, having the Child Jesus, as now the gentile Church is the new Bride for him. The concepts of "sex role" or "gender role" and "rules of marriage," in contrast, are just irrelevant to these texts.
