The Dead Sea Scroll literature opens these points up dramatically. This is a spiritual system which sees presiding deities understood in male terms as husbands. If you try to make the terms fit humans, you'll end up having to do wild interpretive flips—like not executing people for "adultery."
"And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
Under Jewish law, adultery is a capital offense. Are you killing people? If not, then why? Also, why wouldn't this person just marry both women? Clearly allowed in biblical law.
