That is fascinating, because conservative Protestants had long defined themselves in reference to rejecting Hollywood movies. But then, as you say, John Wayne was semi-religiously approved, if apparently with some hypocrisy, and then with "Chariots of Fire" it seemed that movies could be religious texts. All along, these were queer narratives.
