Thanks! Those "sequential hermaphrodites" are fascinating--but other animals in the Bible have odd gender. The donkey of 2 Sam. 19:26 has fluctuating gender. This might relate to the donkey that Jesus rides. In Matthew 21:2, that donkey is female. In John 12:14, it becomes a ‘little donkey’, a neuter case.

In translations of Psalm 42, the deer is oddly sexed- the noun 'deer' is masculine but the verb accompanying it is feminine.
