Some caution may be warranted in assuming 'transgender notions' are recent. I was startled by a scholarly paper- J. David Hester's "Eunuchs and The Postgender Jesus"- in which he points out the 1st century revulsion of Jews toward eunuchs. Philo complained of "these hybrids of man and woman continually strutting about…”

As Hester points out, this may provide context for Jesus' praise of the eunuch in Mt. 19:12. But if the Bible's deity is a male/female state, then such gender "hybrids" may read as unexpectedly positive.
