Thank you, yes it’s been a surprise of my reading so far that Quakers provided the Christian rationale for abolitionism. But Evangelical Christianity—which was my reference—I believe to have been pro-slavery, and formulated originally as theological cover for the British slave trade. The text of “Amazing Grace” is a mass absolution, with Evangelicals acknowledging to themselves they knew slavery was bad, but even so, God loves them specially, they’re still the “elect” and the few who’ll be saved in the apocalyptic finale.
