Thank you, I suspect the NT story can be assembled like a puzzle, but the Catholic tradition has seemed unbreakable. If Lazarus becomes John, as Bible scholars now widely understand seems a textual possibility, then I have to wonder, for example, what becomes of Mary of Bethany?—who seems to be Mary Magdalene, the sister of Lazarus and apparently just as much a focal point for anti-Jesus hostilities. Does she take a new name? If there is any female figure in the later NT storylines who seems to indicate so bold a woman, and one who travels with a man never identified to be married to her, we have of course . . . Priscilla and Aquila.
