You might be interested in William S. Burroughs, the Beat writer, being in Ecuador in the early 1950s looking for ayahuasca. He talks about it in a 1963 book, "The Yage Letters." Burroughs thought, in the talk of the time, that "Yage" could re-map one's entire inner being.

Ayahuasca is a theme that lurks in the Elliot story, with many references to it. Perhaps ayahuasca a source of the utopianism in the Windish saga.
