Oh thank you, but I have to wonder what for Tolkien is a private vs. public opinion. He had no forum for his theological views other than, it seems, the late letters to his grandson, where one would mostly expect filial piety I suppose. Is that kind of thing really viewed as autobiography?

The character who is rather interesting is Humphrey Carpenter. In late life he took to attacking Tolkien personally in startling ways.
