I've noticed this many times—Evangelicals say they love gay people. I considered two theories. First, they may not have paid attention to the messaging and never bought into it.

Or, they may be lying, since as I've also noted many times, Evangelicals seem to believe, as Muslims do, that lying to further the religion is religiously approved.
