I'm not seeing any scriptural support for making long-term contracts and assigning them divine status.

Is there any indication that a human agreement can be deified as a "covenant"? A covenant is divinely enforced. To 'break' a marriage vow does not seem to be divinely enforced. A "covenant" seems to be viewed as eternal (Gen 17:7, etc etc). A marriage terminates at death (cf. Matt 22:30; Rom 7:2).

I see the use of the term "covenant" as a power grab by clerics, as it assigns them jurisdiction over all human relationships that are assigned "covenantal" status.
