I'm a little confused on that point. The Franciscan idea is that Francis was a devotee of the Virgin--seen as the first follower of Jesus and as "Queen Wisdom," but in the scholarly sources Mary doesn't come up much. Francis' inspiration for calling monks "mothers" seems to be more the Bethany sisters, Mary and Martha.
