The Essene suggestion is where the matter gets mysterious. As with the Temple scroll they seem to have had some advanced knowledge of chemistry as was focused on preserving artifacts for long periods of time.

No one seems able to explain how the Shroud was created. Or why it remains in remarkably good shape.
