I do think the antique use of "queer" did involve a hazy concept of sexual identity.

I didn't mention in the post that Frede had called herself a member of "the race that knows Joseph." Like the later phrase "friend of Dorothy" I think this suggests the Bible's Joseph was used as a sign of sexual difference.
