Hagar is a very important figure! (eg. Galatians 4:21-31). Sex slaves in general are key figures in the Bible. I'd see this as the reverse of a 'patriarchal' storytelling mode. Men are mostly irrelevant.

The story is: Sarah is the wife, and Hagar is the slave who suggest she'd be a better wife than Sarah.
