Ha thanks. John Bergsma’s new book Jesus and the Dead Sea Scrolls revisits the idea that John the Baptist was a member of the Qumran community, which he holds out as a precursor to the Catholic priesthood.

John the Baptist does seem to be taken as a child to be trained in the desert. He then leaves the Qumran community and sets up in remote locations baptizing. Early Christian leaders, like Apollos, seem to be identified as John the Baptist disciples.

So to Paul, a desire to be an isolated sect, too beautiful for this world, is an idea he finds in early Jesus followers. To now live in the ordinary world is shocking. But it is the imperative. Live in the world of humans and see the god in the ordinary human. The widow. The slave.
