Ha! Reminds me of Borges on Freud: it all boils down to "a few rather unpleasant facts."
There's also a Jesus connection. The scallop was long used to indicate John the Baptist's baptism of Jesus, as seen in Leonardo's "Baptism of Christ"—a painting that is thought to provide the basic template of Botticelli's "Birth of Venus."
