Many have been mesmerized by the strange, elliptical, aggressive lines of Emily Dickinson. But what did she look like? It’s been a puzzle of history.

Of course there was the childhood portrait. It still hangs in the Dickinson house. That redheaded girl on the left is Emily, but was said later to not really resemble her adult self.
